2020 Forecast for Small Cap Stocks

2020 Forecast for Small Cap Stocks

2020 Forecast for Small Cap Stocks

U.S. small cap stocks posted solid performance in 2019, but lagged behind the S&P 500 Index return of 31.49%. Small cap stocks have now underperformed large cap stocks the previous three calendar years and five out of the last six years.

Our Buffalo Small Cap portfolio management team has published a 2020 forecast for small cap stocks. Considering small caps have historically outperformed large caps, though with greater volatility, to underperform over several years is unusual.

However, since August 2019, the month after the U.S. Federal Reserve (the Fed) began lowering interest rates, small caps have outperformed their larger brethren.

In this latest white paper from the Buffalo Funds, we discuss the following concepts:

  • Earnings growth and relative valuation
  • Value vs. Growth
  • Financials & Energy
  • Technology & Health Care
  • Initial Public Offerings
  • Merger & Acquisition Outlook
  • Impact on the Buffalo Small Cap Fund

“We believe 2020 could be a solid year for small caps, and one where they could revert back to their long term outperformance relative to large cap.”

Download our latest paper to discover why we believe the market backdrop is still moving in a direction that favors premier companies with the potential to benefit from long-term trends trading at attractive valuations.

OVERVIEW:
For the first time in U.S. history, the U.S. economy started and ended an entire decade without a recession. What a difference a year makes! A year ago, market watchers were worried about rising interest rates, trade friction (the U.S. – China trade dispute), and geopolitical tensions, which tempered investors’ risk appetites, resulting in a yearly decline for the S&P 500 Index for the first time since 2008.

In this latest Industry Perspectives, we discuss:

  • The economy should have a stable tailwind from monetary policy throughout 2020.
  • We believe the main driver of monetary policy will continue to be the U.S.-China trade negotiation outcome.
  • We believe equity markets are poised to continue their upward trajectory due to corporate earnings growth and a decent economic backdrop.
  • We continue to expect growth investing to outperform value investing for the foreseeable future.

Top 20 Female Portfolio Managers in America 2019

The Buffalo Funds is pleased to announce Nicole Kornitzer, CFA, was included in Citywire’s annual list of the top 20 female portfolio managers in the United States.

CityWire recently completed an analysis of 16,000 portfolio managers around the world and created a ranking of the top 20 female portfolio managers in the United States. Managers on the list are ranked by risk-adjusted returns of their fund portfolio over the past three years. To make the cut, they must also have top-quartile absolute returns in their particular investment disciplines over that period.

Nicole Kornitzer was included in the list for the second consecutive time – one of only seven women to accomplish the feat. “The fact there are seven of the same names in the 2019 and 2018 lists undoubtedly speaks to these investors’ skills and consistency, but it also reflects the fact that the strategies that worked three years ago – for example, long risk, growth equities and corporate bonds – are still working today,” said Frank Talbot, Head of Investment Research at Citywire.

Nicole, who was ranked #15, has co-managed the Buffalo International Fund since 2009. She also appeared in the Top 20 ranking in 2016.

“We believe Nicole’s inclusion on the Citywire top manager list is a strong testament to the quality of fund managers we have on staff, and we are proud of Nicole’s accomplishments,“ said Clay Brethour, CFA, Buffalo Funds President.

The Buffalo International Fund management team of Nicole Kornitzer and Bill Kornitzer, CFA, (manager since Fund’s inception) consistently apply the Buffalo Funds’ top-down, trend-based analysis, searching for companies that appear poised to benefit from long-term secular growth trends. Thorough country analysis, with an overlay of macro and financial country-specific data, and rigorous bottom-up stock selection help determine investment allocations. Ultimately, stocks are selected based on deep, fundamental research and strict valuation guidelines.
